Where you fit in

The purpose of the Trading & Supply Products business is to maximize sustained value creation in oil products markets with effective management of HSSE performance and the necessary controls for regulated business activities, in support of overarching Downstream objectives of material cash generation and high return on capital.

The scope of the Trading and Supply (T&S) business encompasses all activities globally from lifting fuel components/products from equity refining and purchasing fuel components/products from third parties, to delivering finished products to branded Marketing businesses and selling fuel products/components to counterparties, including global proprietary trading of fuels components/products.

What’s the role

As a Senior Originator & Deal Structuring Lead, you will be responsible in driving origination activity across Europe for the Middle Distillates Trading desk with a specific focus on M&A activity, financial structuring, and direct investments across the value chain. This will include the identification, evaluation, and delivery of such projects and will require a wider deal making skill set. You will be expected to bring and build a network in the industry, financial markets, and associated services while leveraging Shell’s inhouse capabilities to originate deal opportunities with associated trading optionality.

You will also play a significant part in the general business and supply chain development for the desk including long term deal making with B2B customers, resellers, or other institutions for hydrocarbons as well as logistics. Depending on your profile, representation of Shell in logistics JVs or industry associations may be considered.

You will have an established network in financial markets, fund community, or banking. A strong understanding of deal structuring, financing models, and trade financing and hands-on work will be a core part of this role. A strong understanding of oil supply and value chains as well as inherent risks and exposures are a strong plus.

You will be part of the global origination community in Global Middle Distillates trading and will form part of a two person European team deeply integrated into the trading desks ‘decision making process.

The day to day of the incumbent can range between:

  • contributing to or likely leading large scale external negotiations
  • running supply chain implementation projects in detail
  • designing and implementing book or process set ups across a variety of interfaces
  • engaging senior management on business proposals and deals
  • engaging back- and mid-office functions to implement new deal structures and value chains
  • managing wider scope commercial strategy development and value chain development
  • engaging financial markets or setting up sources of funding
  • identifying investment opportunities and carrying out the full process to come to decision points/deal implementation.

Several of the investment and financing elements required for this role will be new to the desk. You will need to develop these with end-to-end coherency, ensuring they are consistent with the relevant controls and accountabilities within the desk.

You will be key in driving high-visibility commercial objectives and, in conjunction with your delegated commercial deal-making responsibilities, will be a key contributor to the global middle distillates trading results.

While you will have no direct reports, you will be required to display strong leadership skills to manage interfaces, project teams, and complex sets of stakeholders.

What we need from you

We are keen to hear from individuals with extensive experience in deal-making, financing, and/or M&A, along with a demonstrated drive to build new capabilities on the desk. Previous experience in deal structuring (financial, legal, exposure) and executing such structures in commodity markets is a strong plus.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • An independent, demonstrable, and reliable network of contacts in financial markets is highly advantageous.
  • Consistently demonstrated strong commercial acumen with a keen focus on bottom-line profitability.
  • Proven ability to build long-standing relationships with external counterparties, aligning with the targeted delivery of the desk at both institutional and industry levels.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with a wide range of stakeholders, coupled with effective communication skills to influence all levels within the organization and across diverse cultures.
  • A solid understanding of price risk management is a plus.
  • A self-starter attitude, strong work ethic, and professional maturity are essential to succeed in this role.
