What’s the role

Be a Plant Equipment owner and Operator with a high level of personal responsibility to help drive availability, reliability and productivity within their area of accountability in a challenging offshore environment.  As the Control Room Operator, you will work with and support dedicated Operations Technicians to deliver efficient work execution and carry out Emergency response duties under the instruction of the Emergency team leader as part of the Emergency Response Team.

This is a position in the Shell’s Aberdeen Upstream Organisation.  On 5th December 2024, Shell announced that there would be a new company entity formed with Equanor for North Sea Assets where they will jointly own the new company.  At completion the employment of the successful candidate for this role will transfer to the new company under The Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006 (“TUPE”)).  Completion is currently estimated to take place on 01 December of 2025. What you’ll be doing

As a Control Room Operator, you will be able to competently maintain and optimise plant and equipment in a challenging environment. You will be expected to use experience and initiative to identify and safely resolve problems, improving performance and efficiency within the Asset. You will be expected to operate the process safely and efficiently and have experience in emergency situation management.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Must have the ability to work in a competent and efficient manner on their own and as part of a team

  • You need to be conversant with front line process diagnostics to reduce downtime and minimise deferment

  • Be able to operate wells and production facilities within defined operating envelopes and be able to translate complex technical instructions into action

  • Be confident and competent to stabilise, slow down and shutdown the plant as required

  • Carried out routine planned, corrective first line maintenance including preparations, isolations & re-instatement of equipment for maintenance and completing any other tasks within their competence/capability allocated by their Line Manager or Operations and Maintenance Coordinator

  • Regular review of process and equipment readings, looking for anomalies – checking valve position and outputs, temperature, level and pressure trends, reporting and addressing any anomalies as necessary (i.e. carrying out first line diagnostics and maintenance)

  • Show due diligence in managing the care of equipment during maintenance and repairs ensuring that the activity is maintained/repaired to the right standard and reinstated as per Work Instruction and returned to service successfully with any key observations or anomalies logged appropriately to allow learning and improvement

  • Participate in Office visits on core key activities that will help drive an improvement in Safety, Productivity, Reliability, Availability or Turnaround performance

  • Whilst the primary role will be a Control Room Operator the role is expected to work as part of a wider Operations Team and will be expected to become a competent outside Plant Operator competent in Oil, Gas and Utilities processes

  • Liase with the onshore engineering team as required to support and provide input to scopes of work/plant improvements

What you bring

  • Experience as an UK Offshore North Sea Control Room Operator on a process plant with wells, oil and gas processing facilities and subsea systems is a must

  • Ability to read PEFS/PIDS and Equipment/Vendor Documentation

  • Proactive and positive minded individual able to conduct root cause analysis and work with onshore engineering team to develop solutions to complex, challenging problems

  • Experience working on a late life asset and the unique challenges this presents

  • Able to complete production chemistry and sampling tasks

  • Experience in permit to work and experience as a permit holder

  • Awareness of typical work instructions, operating procedures and performance standards in the UK offshore oil and gas context

  • Experience of emergency management as a CRO and trained to OPITO CRO Emergency Response standard

  • Experience as an Outside Operations Technician

  • The job holder is also expected to have strong communication skills, excellent attention to detail and a proactive and enthusiastic approach
