As an innovation organization, we maintain a portfolio of digital projects driven by applied research, new product innovation, product contribution and infrastructure goals. As an AI Resident, you will be asked to lead and develop novel AI algorithms on a wide variety of applications ranging from Upstream, Downstream, Retail, Trading, and New Energies. As an AI resident, you will work on highly collaborative teams with domain experts. Training and Development is also a core component of the programme, allowing AI Residents to refine their expertise in AI even further.

What is the Residency

The Shell AI Residency is a fast-paced two-year programme in Shell that offers the ability to develop and apply advanced AI technology on technologies across Shell’s portfolio. Work in these projects is highly collaborative in nature with like-minded experts in AI and in the application domains. Inside the programme, Residents are a part of a global community of 15+ AI Residents. Mentorship is provided to AI Residents via Principle Science Experts and Senior Leaders in the company. Training and Development in AI, as well as publishing and presenting at top-tier conferences is supported. The Residency Programme is intended for individuals with a passion to apply advanced AI solutions to address the future world energy needs.

What’s the role?

You will be responsible for innovation, algorithm development and productizing AI applications with direct business impact. More specifically, your role will include:

  • Lead AI projects

  • Become an active member and ambassador of the AI Residency Programme by collaborating with other AI residents across the globe

  • Knowledge sharing in Shell with a global AI and data science community

  • Use innovative research to influence relevant products and partner teams across Shell, and to have company and societal impact

  • Work on innovative ideas that can bring the right change in the energy industry

  • Implement novel AI algorithms and appraise existing technology

  • Connect with universities, partners, and other external entities to bring in new ideas and solutions

Special Challenges:

  • Ability to collaborate with multiple engineering, product, and non-technical teams in a cross-functional environment

  • Incorporate ideas from the broad-base of AI literature into novel approaches and algorithms.

  • Building constructive and trusting relationships with mostly remote business stakeholders

  • Dealing with challenges in data acquisition from other parts of the business

What we need from you

When it comes to developing one of Shell’s forward-looking innovation programs, your strategic thinking, and strategic partnership development capability will make all the difference. You should have the capability to develop working relationships where you will connect the internal and external innovators, take up their innovations, and help to shape it into a robust product that is ready to generate commercial value. Furthermore, you should have:

  • Must have legal authorization to work in NL/UK on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

  • Degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, theoretical science, statistics, or operational research with experience in large-scale parameterization AI and HPC computing.

  • Masters degree with three years work-experience in computer science, engineering, mathematics, theoretical science, statistics, or operational research with experience in large-scale parameterization AI and HPC computing.

  • A problem-solving mindset and an enthusiasm for learning new skills.

  • Strong technical skills to develop advanced analytics algorithms/models.

  • Strong passion for experimentation and extensive experience in solving hard AI problems.

  • Proven examples of implementing experimental pipelines and prototyping AI applications.

Other skills which will benefit the applicant are:

  • Skills in data design integrity

  • Awareness of lifecycle and data management

  • Experience in DL, DRL, AI applications delivery in a corporate environment

  • Demonstrated stakeholder engagement skills

  • Solid professional software engineering skills

  • Regularly following the scientific journals and regularly publishing in scientific journals

Job Experience Requirements

Direct from Ph.D. Masters or with 3+ years work experience. 

Practical experience in graduate studies or via work experience in the following areas are preferred:

  • Hands-on code development (Python, R, Java).

  • Experience using Git to manage models, and source code.

  • A mathematical background covering some subset of linear algebra, statistics, multivariate calculus, geometry, and numerical methods will be invaluable.

  • Experience with Python/R machine learning ecosystem (sklearn, pipelines. etc).

  • Experience with Neural Network frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras experience.

  • A mathematical background covering some subset of linear algebra, statistics, multivariate calculus, geometry, and numerical methods will be invaluable.

  • Experience in Cloud stacks and architecture, such as Azure, AWS, etc. Comfort with some flavor of Unix shell environment (e.g., bash).
