The Role

Shell is making significant steps in the energy transition. The recently established Power Technology organisation drives energy transition through development and deployment of new power products. Together with our partners we develop cutting edge, competitive and scalable energy storage and integration technologies to enable a 24/7 renewable powered economy. Our storage and integration products aim to enable continuous use of renewable power namely to manage energy expenses over time; to improve energy reliability and to decrease the strain on the grid.

System integration is not a systematic process. Its significant complexity and uncertainty require hands on experience and detailed knowledge of electrical systems response behaviour across applications in various sectors (industry and mobility). As the energy system will evolve to include large amounts of intermittent renewable energy, the ability to predict and control applications (e.g. storage, conversion, charging) is crucial to unlock flexibility and to keep decarbonised electricity systems safe, reliable and cost-competitive. Our team leverages a global technology perspective and footprint to accelerate and scale up Shell’s decarbonisation solutions at home/work and on the road.

Where you fit in

As BTM (Behind the Meter) & Microgrid Systems Team Lead, you will build a team of product engineers. That drive the scale up of BTM and Microgrid technology, tools and processes in Shell’s key energy markets. Our main goal is to enable deeper integration of renewable energy at competitive cost. Designing such systems requires detailed knowledge of electrical systems response behaviour in related applications (e.g. storage, conversion, charging). An integral safety design in all products and services, as well as in all experimental activities is paramount to innovate towards these new solutions.

You will report to the General Manager Energy Storage & Integration Technology as part of the Power Technology organisation.

What’s the role?

You will lead the development and scale up of BTM & Microgrid technologies in line with the Powering Progress ambitions of various Shell businesses including Energy Marketing, Sectors & Decarbonisation, and E-Mobility. More specifically, you will:

  • Build and lead a team of Product Engineers, that develop scalable and repeatable BTM & Microgrid solutions. Will support project deployments for commercial and industrial customers across Shell’s key power markets
  • Guide cross-business teams to deliver electrical system design and realisation in close collaboration with the relevant internal and external partners

This includes:

  • Identify near/mid-term flex use cases and product requirements by connecting the business and technical worlds in customer engagements and opportunity framings
  • Evaluate commercial readiness and potential of relevant technologies for different geographies through regulatory and techno-economic analyses
  • Develop, plan, implement and iterate the Global BTM & Microgrid technology strategy and roadmaps
  • Accelerate maturation of pivotal inhouse and external technologies, tools and processes; piloting, demonstrating and deploying systems towards commercial scale
    • System design defining power, data, connectivity, and functionalities required for delivery of the energy and services Performance optimisation through hardware optimisation and control algorithms
    • Related electronic power topologies and electronic solutions
    • Close collaboration with application system design counterparts with external partners and within Shell (as well as) with the system software development partners
    • Supplier network building and joint technology development - where needed
    • Support scale up across key power markets
  • Have a strong focus on team, product and process safety during development and deployment of new technologies
  • Engage with customers - start-ups, academic, commercial and supply chain partners. To grow knowledge of and contribute to the current and emerging opportunities/technologies
  • Be responsible for technical reports, patent filings and contribute to results published in peer-reviewed publications
  • Represent Shell in relevant academic and industry platforms and present at conferences
  • Be trusted advisor for e.g. Shell sector teams, Shell Ventures and Shell Trading

What we need from you

  • Electrical engineering software packages for RMS and EMT modelling (e.g. PSCAD, PSSe, DigSilent) and script-based automation of these (e.g. PYTHON)
  • Power system design and engineering studies (e.g. dynamic, harmonic, transient, control stability, protection and control) throughout the life cycle of project development, execution and operational phases
  • Power system component testing and hardware in the loop testing
  • Power electronics application (e.g. wind, solar, FACTS, HVDC, STATCOM) design, manufacturing, testing, commissioning and their interaction with power systems
  • Advanced experience in techno-economic analysis and business case development
  • Ability to integrate wide variety of customer needs and stakeholder interests via effective stakeholder and project management. Breaking down complex problems into steps that drive product development
