The Computational Science and Digital Innovation VP-ship (CSDI) is Shell’s primary center for innovation and cutting-edge research in data science and artificial intelligence.
CSDI has special relevance in conducting next generation research and development to support Shell’s move to industry 4.0 and its contribution to the energy transition. CSDI is also committed to the highest quality of applied research, and contributing to the open data science research ecosystem, for example through work on open source data science software.

What’s the role?

As InnerSource Transformation Lead, you will be driving Shell’s professionalization journey towards an integrated code and science ecosystem, engage in cutting-edge data science and AI tools development, and bring the inner and open source philosophy to our wider ecosystem of > 4.000 data scientists, engineers and data science users within Shell. You will build, mentor, and consolidate an ecosystem of tools, maintainers, contributors to inner and open source, track success, and report directly to senior technical leadership and senior management on progress and outcomes.

Major responsibilities and accountabilities are to:

  • Monitors CSDI repository ecosystem and ensures adherence with best inner/open source practice (e.g., code visible, findable, tagged, well-documented, regular code reviews)

  • Actively drives quality of repositories by following up with repository and ecosystem maintainers

  • Conducts regular ecosystem review and reporting to senior management, “quality status” and KPI; escalation point; identify ecosystem opportunities (tech & ops) and suggest actions

  • Serves as a focal point for constructive feedback and upskilling.  Acting as guide and mentor for individuals moving in the ecosystem

  • Provides code reviews to repositories, organize cross code-reviews, organize pair programming sessions and organize targeted upskilling

  • Operates or contribute to social channels around repo ecosystem, professionalization, and quality ambitions, e.g., python yammer, scientific discipline channels

  • Contributes to strategy in professionalization journey and internal plus open source tools development in relevant software ecosystems (data science, AI, data engineering)

  • Provides tactical contribution to and mentoring of contributors to, high-profile inner source software codebases, relevant open source projects in the data science and methodology space

  • Taking a technical and strategic lead role in open source contributions and open source releases in 2023-2025

  • Acts as ambassador and supporting professionalization in internal end user areas, especially nascent ecosystem of new energies asset data science users

  • Engages with continuous improvement and upskilling: Learning new development and engineering practices, technologies; keeping up and contributing to state-of-art

What we need from you

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrable experience in technical and operational management of a mid to large open or inner source repository, project and/or repository ecosystem. Significant experience and at least 10 – 25 contributors in ecosystem is required

  • Preferably Master’s degree in Data Science, AI, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Econometrics, or similar discipline

  • Experienced fluency in at least one programming language common in data science, preferably python

  • Experience with usage, structure, and architecture of common data science toolboxes such as pandas, scikit-learn, tensorflow

  • Experience with the data scientific collaboration stack, including open/inner source ways of working, literate use of version management and digital collaboration platforms like GitHub

  • Experience with common deployment architectures for data science applications and the relevant developer stack

  • Strong oral communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for team and community work

  • Strong technical writing skills especially for technical content such as user documentation, developer documentation or scientific reports

  • A passion for reproducible science, re-usable software, open or inner source communities

  • Experience with quality standards for code, reproducible (data) science, real-world deployment of software applications; high personal standards are expected

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience or involvement with significant open source projects in the data science and AI space

  • Experience with development or extension of common data science toolboxes

  • Experience in practical data science; including scoping, problem formulation, success control; data analysis methodology; notebook style analyses, reproducible analyses

  • Experience with common classes of models in statistics, machine learning

  • Experience with change management in a complex, multi-stakeholder ecosystem, optimally with a technology focus
