Process Researcher – PO Derivatives

Where you fit
The Chemicals Technology group (PTX/D) supports Shell’s chemicals business, which includes Base Chemicals, Polyethylene, Ethylene Oxide/Ethylene Glycol, Styrene monomer/Propylene Oxide/Derivatives, DPC/Polycarbonate, Higher Olefins/Derivatives and Solvents. Our partners are predominately Shell Chemicals & Products and Shell Downstream Chemicals Joint Ventures.
The Propylene Oxide Derivates (PODer) develops new grades of products and provides technical support to PODer plants. During the last decade the PODer R&D has successfully supported the growth of business and manufacturing. plants in Netherlands, Singapore and China. PODer is recognized as an important area for growth in Chemicals. The group does R&D on future technologies for sustainable growth of chemicals such as Polyurethane recycling and carbon/energy efficiency catalyst technologies.
What’s the role?
As Process Researcher – PO Derivatives, you will have a broad range of activities, including
- Develop and run a laboratory-based programs/projects supporting polyol development and PODer technical issues.
- Support implementation of process and/or process/technology improvements.
Depending on individual experience and organization needs, your role may vary and consist of a mix of the following accountabilities:
- Develop significant depth and breadth of knowledge regarding polyols and competitive products, develop familiarity with associated process technology
- Develop significant depth and breadth of knowledge regarding the actions and chemical properties of polyols at the molecular level and its impact on foam/CASE properties
- Fill-the-pipeline, and/or step-out R&D activities, manage/run lab experimentation
- Manage and deliver projects through the stage gate process in a timely fashion.
- Plans, coordinates and supervises activities performed by subcontractors and suppliers and signals non-compliance
- Manages the relationship with multiple (groups of) internal and external (i.e. research / academic institutions) stakeholders on tactical level. Scale and severity of consequences if things go wrong are limited, involving some stakeholder management.
- Works closely with business stakeholders and is able to build business cases in conjunction with commercial to identify opportunities and deliver solutions.
- As Autonomous Researcher / Scientist, translates the R&D guidelines and standards into practice and solves common technical R&D challenges. Works within company standards and policies under defined directions while receiving occasional guidance on techniques.
- Adhere to quality standards and ensure that all HSSE, Group, Regulatory, Quality and other appropriate standards are complied with.
- Understand technical developments in areas of polyols, Competitive landscaping and IP tracking
- Support the delivery of the Development Release program for new activities, ensuring appropriate support for successful deployment in current and new facilities.
What We Need from You
When it comes to working in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, chemists, product specialists and diverse stakeholders, excellent people skills will be a key differentiator. A highly motivated will have a direct impact on the way we contribute to the group and Shell overall. Furthermore, you will have:
- Ph.D. or master’s degree or equivalent in Organic/Polymer Chemistry. PhD preferred.
- Working knowledge of intellectual property
- 2-3 years of experience post Ph.D. 5-6 years of experience post Masters in Polyols/Polymers or related experience
- Hands-on synthesis and characterization of new materials with proven experience in in organic/polymer synthesis. Polyols polyol synthesis using commercially applied technologies are a plus.
- Experience with analytical techniques such as GC-MS, HPLC, NMR, elemental analysis, titration; experience with extending or developing novel experimental techniques beneficial
- Understanding of Process chemistry and scale up will be a plus
- Understanding of application of polyols for polyurethane applications is a plus
