What’s the role

Shell Trading integrates a worldwide trading network with an unsurpassed global portfolio in Crude Oil, Refined Oil Products, LNG, Gas, Power & Environmental Products with larger locations in London, Houston, Calgary, Singapore, Dubai, Rotterdam, and Bahamas. The Contracts Operations team is responsible for managing the entire contracts process, including the provision of pre-deal and post deal commercial advice, contract drafting, internal authorization and dispatch of contracts/contract responses, records management, and value-driven commercial advice to the business when negotiating complex contractual arrangements.

The Senior Contracts Advisor is a member of the Contracts Operations team, reporting to the Contracts Team Lead Crude - North America, and is responsible for supporting the Crude trading and supply desks by drafting and negotiating complex spot and term sale and purchase contracts for crude oil, storage contracts, tenders, service level agreements (SLAs), letters of indemnity, transport contracts, and some of the related documentation for such contracts.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide pre-deal and post-deal commercial advice to traders with respect to the commercial, contractual, and financial risks associated with their business, identifying areas where there are opportunities for value creation as well as areas where the exposure to value leakage exists

  • Draft and negotiate complex / bespoke contracts/agreements that are fit for purpose

  • Authorize outgoing contracts and responses to incoming contracts for complex/bespoke deals before dispatch to the counterparty

  • Negotiate complex contractual arrangements/framework contracts/storage agreements/tenders

  • Ensure compliance with Shell's Contractual Allocation of Risk Framework, Ethics and Compliance requirements, and overall Control Framework to ensure protection of Shell’s license to operate by ensuring/verifying that all contracts comply with all local implementation policies, manual of authorities, business controls, Shell Group policy and standards as well as meeting all regulatory and regulated market requirements

  • Provide advice and help in resolving complex contractual disputes with counterparties, liaising with corporate legal counsel, as necessary

  • Maintain an awareness of any new trade opportunities and regulatory restrictions that may involve changes to existing procedures or support processes

  • Prepare and negotiate ad hoc agreements needed to facilitate new business and structured transactions

  • Assist in maintaining a contract and clause database, as well as manage an efficient status reporting mechanism

  • Assist in refining/revising current contracts processes in line with those of other functions such as Settlements to reduce profit leakage and ensure optimal efficiency

What you bring

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Bachelor's degree required or equivalent experience

  • Must have at least 4 years of experience in similar positions (energy/commodity trading or shipping environment in a commercial, operational, legal, paralegal or contract administration role)

  • Experience in negotiating complex commercial agreements

  • Working knowledge in trading business within the energy or oil and gas industry is preferred

  • Advanced knowledge of internal contractual requirements including, but not limited to, risk allocation principles, insurance requirements and trade compliance regulations
