The Role

What's the role -

To Cost Lead will be responsible of the the delivery of standard, consistent and robust cost management frameworks and procedures to projects and/ or turnaround (TA) events. Accountabilities can be summarized as follows:

  • Support the delivery of consistent but appropriate cost management structures for a portfolio of small to medium-sized projects and/ or medium to mega complexity turnaround events.

  • Assist with the roll-out of the Company standard tools and processes and apply them on projects and/or turnaround events.

  • Support the implementation of project Cost Breakdown Structures (CBS) and their population from the estimate.

  • Assist in the preparation of Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).

  • Assist in the generation of accurate monthly cost reports, including variances from the plan on commitment, value of work done (VOWD), and management of changes against approved Investment Proposals (IPs).

  • Assist in analysis of trends.

  • Support implementation of Earned Value Management process.

  • Maintain and promote realism in the cost forecasts in the face of commercial pressure and optimism from project/turnaround teams.

  • Maintain consistency in cost basis through rigorous adherence to the controls processes.


  • Full responsibility for establishing, managing and delivering Cost Controls activities on a portfolio of projects with annual spend of $200M+/year or medium sized (i.e., >$80M) turnaround events. 

  • Direct interface with mainly internal stakeholders, such as Project Managers, Project Engineers, Turnaround Execution team, Cost Estimators, Schedulers, Planners, Contracting & Procurement team, Finance, Operations, EPC contractors, as well as, site field contractors.

Key Challenges:

  • Highly demanding and fast paced job, particularly during turnaround execution.

  • Balancing and delivering results with the stated goal of “no surprises”.

  • Maintain strong relationships with entire team during times of high energy and stress.

  • Effective stakeholder engagement is critical.

Skills and Requirements

What we need from you -

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.​

  • Engineering degree and/or certification as a Cost Controller or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum five (5) years cost control experience in the energy sector.

  • Extensive experience in turnaround or project controls.

  • Works effectively in a team environment and builds consensus.

  • Working knowledge of a broad range of cost controls systems, tools, and practices specifically in the oil & gas industry.

  • Computer skills – SAP, Microsoft Office (particularly Excel), Forecaster (considered an asset), Primavera (considered an asset).

  • Strong leadership, communication, and presentation skills.
