What’s the role

Shell Australia is seeking a proactive and experienced Security and Emergency Management (SEM) Advisor to join our Midstream Operations team in Gladstone, Queensland. Shell’s midstream business in Gladstone is centered around its QGC (Queensland Gas Company) operations and the QCLNG (Queensland Curtis LNG) Project.

In this critical role, you will be responsible for delivering robust security and emergency response capabilities across our Midstream assets, in accordance with Shell’s in country & global standards and Australian State & Federal regulatory requirements. The role is estimated to be 60% Security & 40% Emergency Response (ER) but can vary according to business priorities. Each discipline will have support from contracted Security & ER assets; you will be responsible for coordinating those assets. You will report to the asset Safety & Environment Team Lead.

The SEM Advisor is responsible for executing and overseeing regulatory requirements within the maritime and conventional security operations strategy. This role supports the Midstream Asset and Marine Operations Manager(s) for the QGC LNG facility on Curtis Island and its surrounding areas. The Security Focal Point ensures compliance with security regulations, manages security risks, and coordinates security measures to safeguard the facility against unlawful interference.

The Emergency Response Focal Point is responsible for overseeing the structure for managing emergencies in support of the Midstream Asset and Marine Manager(s) in accordance with Midstream Emergency Management Arrangements.

What you’ll be doing

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of security and emergency response services across Midstream operations, contractors, and external stakeholders.

  • Provide expert technical advice on security, emergency management, and business continuity to the Midstream Business & Leads as required.

  • Act as the focal point for audits, inspections, and assurance reviews aligned with Shell Safety Environment & Asset Management (SEAM) Standards and the Shell Security & Incident Management Framework.

  • Maintain and review key operational plans including Security, Maritime Security, Emergency Response, Adverse Weather, and Business Continuity.

  • Build and manage relationships with Australian local, state, and federal emergency/security services and regulatory agencies.

  • Support incident investigations and present findings to Asset Management Incident Review Panels.

  • Perform duties as the designated Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO) and Authorized Officer (Gladstone Ports Corporation) for QCLNG Curtis Island

  • Act as the focal point to oversee and assure the business requirement for contracted security (G4S) and emergency response services (CPA) are aligned, liaison with the respective contract owners & holders is essential.

  • Organise & assure required competency for nominated Emergency Response Team (ERT) members, liaise with training provider, regular review of training content.  ERT members are found from within the operating asset workforce.

  • Liaise with your Shell Australia security & emergency management country & asset peer group.

What you bring

We are keen to speak to professionals with the following:  

  • Certified Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO) with MSIC and Queensland Security License.

  • Diplomas in Security Risk Management and Public Safety (Emergency Management), or similar. Qualified in ICS and AIIMS incident management systems.

  • Extensive experience in LNG or similar regulated, high-materiality industries.

  • Operational experience in emergency services, or military, at a senior non-commissioned level or equivalent is highly desirable.

  • Strong knowledge of Queensland Emergency Services management & operations.

  • Expert in Security & Emergency Preparedness: Skilled in threat assessment, risk analysis, incident management, and business continuity planning, with auditing and assurance experience.

  • Strong Leadership & Communication: Proven ability to train and influence stakeholders across all levels, with excellent interpersonal and decision-making skills.

  • Industry-Specific Experience: Background in oil and gas HSSE operations and Marine LNG, including port operations and remote/high-risk environments.

  • Collaborative & Ethical Professional: Effective in stakeholder engagement, coordination, and collaboration, with a strong foundation in integrity and ethics.

  • Continuous Improvement Mindset: Technically proficient and invested in ongoing learning, project and risk management, and stress/task management.

This role is based in Gladstone, Queensland. Candidates must be able to commute or reside locally to meet the operational needs of the position.
