
Senior Legal Counsel
What’s the role
The Senior Legal Counsel will directly deliver and/or coordinate legal support that is high value, high risk and complex in nature. This role will apply a broad knowledge of applicable and emerging laws in the United States and advise a diverse group of stakeholders on a wide range of privacy issues. This role requires the ability to provide both strategic legal advice as well as leadership on the implementation of business and legal strategies and organizational transformation.
What you’ll be doing
The Senior Legal Counsel position will work with team members to provide professional, timely, cost effective and practical legal advice and support to IDT and across the enterprise. This role will primarily support data privacy but will also operate as a critical expert resource to colleagues across the team in which it sits.
In particular, the Senior Legal Counsel IDT & Data Privacy will:
Liaise with senior internal and external stakeholders regarding US-related data privacy issues and how those issues relate to wider global privacy matters, including the General Counsel and Managing Counsel – Legal Services Projects and Technology; business EVP’s; VP’s and GM’s and other senior leaders, outside counsel, government representatives, customers, suppliers, and business partners
Interface with the Data Protection Officer within the Shell Ethics and Compliance Office (SECO).
Focus on strategic high risk work such that advice and guidance can be delivered through others
Lead data privacy incidents including assessing the nature and severity of incidents, making reports to regulators and engaging with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation under legal privilege where required
Provide pragmatic and creative solutions to complex and high risk, high value challenges
Maintain an effective external network in order to benchmark privacy issues with other businesses and industries and have the ability and credibility to influence interpretation of regulations as applicable
Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor more junior team members
Understand and balance business objectives with legal requirements
Creatively find solutions that enable the business need and allow for risk to be mitigated which are compliant with Shell’s Performance Framework and acceptable to achieving the desired outcome, including improving and learning from existing Legal tools and service models.
Developing and implementing key strategic initiatives to maximize the use of legal resources and create best practices and guidance and training modules for stakeholders for further continuous improvement and simplification.
What you bring
Must have legal authorization to work in the USA on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
A Law degree is required and IAPP CIPP certification is preferred.
10+ years of professional experience in the legal field
Working knowledge of data privacy laws and regulations globally with significant experience in the US
Extensive experience drafting privacy policies, procedures, templates, and toolkits to be used by a variety of legal and business stakeholders
Experience leading and supporting litigation and investigation response efforts, including the implementation of discovery action plans that also comply with global data privacy regulations
Proven ability to manage potential exposure to legal sanctions and risk exposure concerning privacy, particularly as related to litigation and investigations
Broad knowledge of IT terminology, processes, systems, and applications, as well as knowledge of database concepts, data modeling, and database applications
Senior level legal expertise in drafting, negotiating complex agreements relating to the collection, use and transfer of personal data.
Demonstrated experience and mindset for change management and business transformation together with an ability to balance and calibrate risk
The ability to work in a less well-defined legal environment with clients who need pragmatic legal advice.
What we offer
The base salary range for this position is $210,000-$314,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.
For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave for birthing parents, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.
Additionally, employees are eligible for short-term disability leave for up to 26 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay as well as Long-Term Disability insurance. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.
