What’s the role?

Shell Trading and Supply (T&S) business is one of the largest crude oil trading operations in the world and this role offers a unique opportunity to be part of a growing and innovative business.  The business is extremely dynamic, fast-moving, and demanding. This highly commercial role offers an excellent opportunity to be exposed to the Global Crude Trading business and be a part of the commercial team working together with internal and external stakeholders to develop and maximize business opportunities.  Business opportunities include working with companies along the entire crude vertical: Upstream, Midstream, and Downstream.   

Shell Trading US Company (STUSCO) is looking for an experienced Business Development Sr. originator (Sr. Originator) with a proven track record to join the North America crude trading team.  The Sr. Originator is empowered to capitalize on experience and existing industry and financial relationships in the oil & gas sector, and partner with the trading desks on physical crude trading opportunities. 


  • Originate, evaluate, structure, and negotiate complex commodity-based transactions (Transactions or Structured Transactions):
  • Physical transactions: Long-term supply and offtake agreements, early pays, short term and long term prepays, physical embedded commodity hedging, credit intermediations, physical inventory monetization, asset tolling, etc. 
  • Financial transactions: VPPs, securitizations, RBLs, unitranche term loans, development and drill-co financings, acquisition financings, recapitalizations, restructurings, financial hedging, etc.  
  • Develop and maintain key strategic Trading and sophisticated Industry relationships (both outside and within Shell). Lead and contribute to development of desk business strategies and link strategy to Business Development and Origination priorities.
  • Identify and develop market strategies and assess risks of various transactions.
  • Originate and manage with traders a Structured Transactions book
  • Stay appraised and knowledgeable about market trends, S&D dynamics, financial and geopolitical factors impacting the crude sector, anticipate industry changes and apply this knowledge to innovative deals.
  • Implement effective risk-management strategies to mitigate exposure and ensure the financial soundness of Structured Transactions.
  • Work closely with Business Development Structurers and business partners on all aspects of deal assessment, due diligence, approvals, closing and portfolio management. Thus, serving as an integral link in the Deal Team structure and ultimately responsible for the maintenance and relationship management of the deal(s).  
  • Represent Shell Trading & Supply Crude in cross-business forums to ensure that integrated value is identified and realized to enhance the overall end-to-end performance of the Shell Group.
  • Ensure all transactions are compliant with relevant regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Provide strategic input on behalf of Shell Trading to the wider Shell Group. 

This role will require 20-30% travel within United States.

What we need from you

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • A minimum bachelor technical degree in business, finance, economics or related
  • A proven 10+ years track record of originating, closing and successfully managing a meaningful portfolio of oil & gas structured trade, financings, or investments. Or a successful track record as a crude trader with P&L and increasing responsibilities
  • Strong analytical and learner mindset with commercial acumen to assess and determine risk/reward parameters
  • Excellent understanding of the oil & gas industry with existing industry relationships.
  • Knowledge of risk management and financial analysis
  • Strong networking and relationship-building capabilities
  • Knowledge of industry regulation and compliance
  • Project management experience, with a strong understanding of deal economics
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a collaborative fast-paced team environment

The base salary range for this position is $191,000 - $287,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave to birthing mothers, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents. Additionally, employees are eligible for disability leave for up to 52 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.
