The Role

What’s the role?

The successful candidate will be reporting to the Manager Trading Surveillance Americas, the Specialist Trading Surveillance is a member of the Compliance Framework and Oversight team within Trading and Supply (T&S) Compliance.

The T&S Trading Surveillance team has global responsibility for the monitoring & surveillance (M&S) of T&S’s trading practices and business communications.

The Specialist Trading Surveillance will be expected to:
  • Perform Specialist Surveillance tasks for the LATAM business.
  • Monitor T&S’s trading practices and business communications to detect market abuse and non-compliance with other regulations and requirements.
  • Assist in assessing the appropriateness of M&S tools, policies, procedures and processes on an ongoing basis.
  • Liaise with the Compliance Regulation team to evaluate and analyse market events and regulatory interventions, design and implement mitigating actions to address any possible gaps in policies or tools, and to focus M&S investigative analysis.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Controls & Reporting team to develop key elements of the Monitoring & Surveillance control plans.
  • Work with the Compliance Project team to deliver improved M&S processes and tools;
  • Act as an escalation focal point for advice and support of Senior Analysts and Analysts on day to day events and findings.
  • Assist in analysing Management Information (MI) on Compliance Monitoring & Surveillance activities (including case reports) for reporting at the T&S Governance, Risk, Compliance & Assurance (GRCA) Committees.
  • Partner as a Monitoring & Surveillance SME with other parts of Compliance, the T&S Businesses and other Functions.

What we need from you
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Must be fluent (written & oral) in both English and Spanish.
  • Portuguese language skills an advantage.
  • Minimum 4 years in area of specialization including significant exposure to either compliance, trading, or risk required.
  • Significant experience in monitoring trading practice and business communications in a Financial Services or trading firm.
  • Significant experience of market monitoring tools and software, including Excel, data analytic tools such as Alteryx or Python and other database systems to deal with large data sets for exploratory analytics, as well as visualisation applications (such as Spotfire or Tableau) and automated monitoring tools.
  • Significant knowledge of the Americas physical/financial crude oil, refined products, natural gas and/or electricity markets is required.
  • Strong understanding of trading instruments, trading strategies, and risk concepts as well as fundamentals of exchange traded/derivative activity, including contract specification, delivery point and delivery mechanism, exchange rules including (but not limited to) position limits and block trades.
  • Understanding the logistics of the physical markets, including delivery, transportation and storage and typical market activity e.g. seasonality, inventory release days and major market participants.
  • Robust understanding of global financial regulations, compliance requirements and the Shell Code of Conduct as they relate to the Americas.
  • Deep understanding of trading systems and resulting data and the ability to understand how systems output is linked to the monitoring tools input.
  • Robust analytical ability, skilled at advanced database querying to enable identification of critical information to meet decision making needs.
  • Mastery of continuous improvement methodologies to improve processes and ability to configure, test implement new tools as part of a project team.
  • Ability to interact with a wide range of stakeholders. Credible and persuasive in ensuring the needs of our complex business are fully understood, resolve conflict and deliver tough messages.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and partner effectively within a global team.
