Where you fit in

Within Shell Trading, Crude & Products Freight Trading desks control a big fleet comprising of Long Range, Medium Range, VLGC, Crude, Specialized and Chemicals (Office locations are in Houston, London, Dubai, Bahamas and Singapore).

This role is part of Trading & Supply Crude & Product Commercial Freight Operations reporting to Vessel Performance Manager, which is part of a Global Products & Crude Commercial Freight Operations team responsible for providing professional freight operations to the team of Freight Traders.

What’s the role?

The Vessel Performance Analyst will work closely with Freight Traders, and alongside Freight Operations, Contract Managers and the Vessel Performance Manager, with the main objective to delivering bottom line value for the freight trading desks through data analysis and visualisation to assist traders make financially beneficial decisions.

More specific responsibilities include:

  • Monitor real-time consumptions and emissions to understand where inefficiencies lie
  • Develop and enhance existing vessel optimisation tools currently used to monitor and visualise fleet performance and emissions data
  • Develop platforms and dashboards to provide data to Traders/Operators for fleet performance on usage in econs (e.g. average consumption, best speeds, good vs bad performers, best ships to use in certain trades, emissions including but not limited to EU ETS)
  • Work closely with Vessel Performance Manager to provide support and guidance to Freight Trading desks to apply best practices for running time charter fleet
  • Work alongside Freight Operations to support real-time interventions
  • Focal point to engage external service providers on voyage optimisation and analytics
  • Provide ad-hoc commercial and contractual advice regarding interpretation of clauses and potential exposures for freight trading, especially clauses relevant to vessel performance (agreeing new Speed and Consumptions)
  • Identify areas where there are opportunities to add commercial value, as well as areas where the exposure to value leakage exists
  • Determine & implement ideas from the Shipping Value team which can be applied to the Oil Time Chartered Fleet
  • Assist Vessel Performance Manager with data analysis and presentation for engagements with external parties (owners and technical managers) to have productive discussions on improving fleet efficiency
  • Act as backup for managing vessel performance claims process, delivering bottom line value for freight trading desks through recoveries of claims
  • Look for ways to close out disputed claims by liaising with multiple departments in the Shell Group (Freight Trading, Freight Operations, Legal, Claims, Finance, Vetting, Bunker Sourcing, Shipping Technology) as well as external parties (Ship Owners, Vessels, brokers)
  • Act as backup to manage relevant Market Related Hire processes such as monthly option declarations, hire invoice approvals, identification of hire exposures.

What we need from you

  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualisation skills with commonly available tools i.e. MS Excel, Power BI, Qlik etc.
  • Ability to extract and analyse data from multiple sources using analytical tools
  • Self-starter, motivated to learn/develop new skills as per evolving demands of the job
  • Keen interest in data analytics and the key info/message indicated by the numbers
  • Generic requirements:
    • General troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
    • Strong interpersonal skills, able to cooperate with colleagues in a multinational and interdisciplinary environment
    • Good communicator who can deliver technical messages in compelling ways to internal/external stakeholders
    • Project & time management as well as organizational skills
    • Good team player
    • Oral and written fluency in English language

Good-to-have/added advantage:

  • Knowledge on technologies commonly used in Shipping sector
  • Experience in data analysis with programming tools/languages eg. Python, SQL, Matlab, Excel VBA
  • Basic understanding of ships and their day-to-day operations
  • Highly organised and able to take on responsibilities independently. Meticulous with a keen eye for detail
