The Role

This is a chance to work for one of the world’s leading Foundations, helping to apply investment thinking to tackle major social and environmental issues. It’s a job with the potential to impact millions of lives.

Where you fit in

You’ll be a key part of the Shell Foundation (SF), an independent UK charity established in 2000. We’re a unique organisation with a positive mission: to apply business thinking to major social and environmental issues linked to the energy sector.

Our growing portfolio addresses two major global development challenges: access to energy and access to affordable transport. We act like an investor in taking a hands-on, “more than money” approach, creating valuable social impact and ensuring the financial sustainability of our partners.

What’s the role?

Part Portfolio Manager, part Investment Advisor, your role will be to source, screen, invest in and incubate start-ups in emerging markets. If you can think like an investor and an entrepreneur, we’ll trust you to make decisions and move fast on investments; something few Foundations can offer.

Reporting to our Business Development Manager, you’ll be managing relationships with funders (including restricted donors like USAID and DFID) and implementing growth plans for different energy and mobility related projects. You would also feed into our China strategy for Africa and think through complex supply chains in the process. Travel is a key aspect of the role and you can expect to be travelling for 90 days per year.

What we need from you

We are looking for individuals who have a business background– coupled with a strong degree and an MBA. You will need experience of in one of the focus sectors, energy, agriculture or transportation. More specifically we are looking for the following skillsets to match the criteria of the role:
  • Language skills – Fluent in English and proficient in Mandarin (including certification)
  • Master in Business Administration (MBA)
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)
  • Significant relevant experience in strategy, finance and/or consulting
  • Previous experience investing in and growing early stage companies in mobility and energy including co-creating ideas
  • Experience in designing accelerator programmes in developing markets
  • Track record in sourcing and managing investment portfolios in East Africa and/or India
  • Experience in the design, development and implementation of new fundraising strategies with demonstrated results
  • Experience and knowledge in Chinese supply chains and investment landscape
  • Knowledge and networks in electric vehicle innovations and new mobility solutions in an urban setting
  • Thought leader in urban mobility innovation and policy engagement in developing markets
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders from the private and public sector
  • Strong network in investor and international development ecosystem
  • Experience in completing due diligence and market landscaping work
  • Experience in advising and mentoring executive level and Boards in early stage organisations

You’ll need to convince us you’re conversant with sustainable development and social investment issues: that you understand the problems people face in emerging markets. This is preferably backed up by first-hand experience of working in emerging markets and with high-level external stakeholders. Personally, you’ve shown you’re a strong negotiator; someone who can prepare persuasive investment cases and confidently present to board level.
