The Role

What’s the role?

Shell Hydrogen is part of the Shell New Energies segment that focuses on maturing and scaling the H2 supply chain for the growing global demand in the coming decades. At the H2 Product Development Team, we identify unique opportunities in the H2 industry and develop products for Shell’s future H2 assets and projects. We created the Hydrogen Digital Platform as a key strategic product that would allow us to continuously absorb and standardize data from every part of the supply chain and create insights that can be applied to the rest of the industry. We have deployed IoT solutions in our US assets and are scaling out to a global presence.

The Software Architect will be part of the New Fuels Hydrogen Product and Technology Development team, reporting to the Hydrogen Product Development Team Lead.

  • As the software architect of the Shell Hydrogen Digital Platform (HDP), you oversee the product’s technical vision and manage technical contributors’ deliverables and growth. Since we work as a small agile team, we expect the software architect to do hands-on programming at least 40% of the time. A typical software architect in this position will:
  • Work with HDP’s Product Development Lead to define and maintain the product roadmap and the technical evolution of the platform.
  • Create, maintain, and evolve the platform’s architecture using AWS’ serverless services to meet scalability and security requirements while controlling the platform’s operational cost.
  • Scope sprint tasks on a daily and weekly basis with clear technical specifications and success criteria.
  • Verify technical contributors’ deliverables through in-depth code and design reviews.
  • Create and enforce coding standards and team-wide conventions using tools such as Prettier and ESLint.
  • Ensure the team’s knowledge is captured through proper and extensive documentation, including architecture diagrams and data catalogs.
  • Work on technical tickets such as writing IaC deployment scripts using AWS CloudFormation, SAM, or CDK, creating new AWS IoT to Kinesis pipelines to ingest assets’ live data, and implementing new software features.
  • Gain insights of how our H2 assets function by looking at data from various sources.
  • Manage vendor and contractor relationships for software related services and products.
  • Collaborate with other Product Development Leads and IT Program Managers to ensure all hydrogen products’ data integration with the platform are enabled and provide architectural and technical oversight on products’ design and implementation when necessary.
  • Work with Shell internal IT functions to satisfy risk control and internal requirements.
  • Plan and lead experiments of new technologies and solutions to maintain HDP’s technical advantage as the market leader.
  • Participate and lead new digital product development as part of the HDP product line to meet the growing demand of hydrogen globally.
  • Provide mentorship to team members and manage interns throughout the year.

What we need from you
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science or equivalent engineering degree with a solid understanding of computer science required.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience building software systems as a software developer and at least 3+ years of experience designing software systems as a software architect is a must.
  • Must have at least 5+ years of having direct interaction with work products’ customers and end users. Experience with design sprints and rapid prototyping required.
  • Must have at least 2+ years of working with AWS serverless services such as Kinesis, S3, Athena, and Lambda. Experience with data-intensive, high-throughput applications greatly preferred.
  • Production experience deploying IoT solutions in industrial settings and familiarity with IoT concepts such as device shadow and edge processing. Prior experience with AWS Greengrass Core and IoT services greatly preferred.
  • Familiarity with industrial sensors, wearable devices, and wireless communication protocols preferred.
  • Expertise in cloud architecture and security. Certificates such as AWS Solution Architect preferred.
  • Prior experience in business or statistical analytics preferred.
  • Proficiency in agile software development in languages such as Python, Node.js, Go, and Kotlin.
