What’s the role
As a Laboratory Supervisor, you’ll be the driving force behind the daily operations of a high-performing, 24/7 Product Quality Laboratory at Shell Polymers Monaca. Reporting directly to the Product Quality Manager, you’ll lead a team of skilled lab technicians across two rotating shifts, ensuring that all testing is conducted with accuracy, precision, timeliness, and full alignment with Shell’s world-class safety and quality standards.
In this role, you’ll do more than manage schedules—you’ll mentor and develop your team, foster a culture of continuous improvement, and serve as a key liaison between lab operations and broader production goals. You’ll ensure compliance with ISO 9001, maintain rigorous quality assurance protocols, and drive data integrity through statistical quality control (SQC) monitoring and method reviews.
You’ll also play a pivotal role in implementing new technologies and supporting training programs that keep your team at the forefront of analytical excellence. Whether it’s troubleshooting complex lab issues, contributing to audits, or ensuring seamless shift handovers, your leadership will directly impact the quality and reliability of Shell’s polymer products.
What you’ll be doing
Support Activities - Enabling the lab team and broader Product Quality organization through training, communication, and administrative support
Motivate, mentor, upskill, and develop direct reports by ensuring staff obtain required competencies
Provide frequent and timely feedback and coaching to Lab Technicians
Conduct individual performance assessments for Lab Technicians
Demonstrate the ability to give and receive constructive feedback
Implement and support training programs for new and existing lab personnel
Provide support in other areas of the Product Quality Team as required
Manage Lab Technician competencies and assist in evaluating qualifications. Participate in procedure and method reviews
Participate in the laboratory audit program
Apply consistent quality practices across the Shell Polymers Monaca site
Technical Support - Ensuring the technical accuracy, quality, and compliance of lab operations
Assure conformance with QA procedures, including calibration, analytical schedules, methods, training, standardizations, SQC, Management of Change, job aids, record retention, and document control.
Monitor SQC charts and provide feedback as necessary
Possess knowledge of quality assurance systems and procedures in the laboratory
Possess knowledge of laboratory instrumentation
Ensure laboratory practices align with ISO 9001 standards and contribute to ongoing accreditation efforts
Monitor and investigate data quality issues and provide feedback for improvement
Install, train, and implement analytical instrument improvement projects to stay current with the latest technology
Develop, implement, and update laboratory testing work instructions and procedures as necessary
Lead and/or participate in MOC (Management of Change) meetings
Operations Support - Day-to-day management of lab personnel, equipment, and workflow to ensure smooth and compliant operations
Supervise direct reports, including scheduling, performance management, and development planning
Provide leadership and enforce company HSSE requirements
Provide coaching and feedback on HSE issues
Serve as the focal point for on-shift Sphera entries
Ensure laboratory services are performed according to the agreed sample schedule, laboratory procedures, and work instructions
Ensure adequate shift coverage and resource allocation to meet testing demands
Implement product quality policies and standards into site work processes and management systems
Demonstrate strong teamwork and communication skills
Exhibit analytical troubleshooting skills
Provide input to test runs, plant tests, special projects, etc.
Ensure clear and consistent communication practices, including effective shift handovers, concise end-of-shift reports, and cross-functional updates
What we need from you
Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than the current employer
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a comparable technical field
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
Proficient in laboratory instrumentation
Understanding of regulatory requirements (e.g., HazCom, MSDS, emissions, DOT)
Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
Familiarity with ISO 9001 and product quality standards
Basic understanding of plant economics
Working knowledge of SAP Quality Management (QM) module
The base salary range for this position is $101,000 - $151,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.
For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave for birthing parents, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.
Additionally, employees are eligible for short-term disability leave for up to 26 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay as well as Long-Term Disability insurance. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.
