What’s the role

This is a role in the Shell Brasil Technology organization, which is tasked with formulating and executing leading R&D projects with 3rd parties in Brazil that satisfy our R&D Levy obligation with the ANP, align with Shell strategy, and deliver value to Shell. The R&D obligation is material and equivalent to 1% of the revenue from Shell´s production from our Brazilian fields (Operated and Non-Operated). Our R&D project portfolio is diverse, and encompasses subsurface, offshore engineering, well engineering, low-carbon, and digital themes.

The incumbent will work in the subsurface technology team as primary focus, with close interaction with the other themes as appropriate. An important focus will be interactions with the Shell assets and their JV partners, and Subject Matter Experts locally and in the Shell Technology centers abroad. The incumbent will have subsurface training and practice in Geophysics, as a key enabler to the characterization, recovery, and monitoring of reservoirs, especially those in the Brazilian pre-salt. The chosen candidate will propose, develop, and manage R&D projects formulated with universities and Brazilian companies, embodying a technical yet entrepreneurial and broader-thinking profile, willing to learn and grow into new technical areas.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead ongoing R&D projects with strong geophysical content with 3rd parties, providing technical steer to maximize value to Shell, with support from Shell Subject Matter Experts and colleagues in the assets

  • Accountable for management of these projects to meet all Shell internal requirements and ANP regulations, with support from dedicated commercial, finance and portfolio specialists.

  • Some projects may involve building new or updating laboratories, fieldwork, or other data-gathering activities

  • Contribute to the identification and formulation of new project opportunities and new partnerships that support Shell´s Business and our Energy Transition strategy.

  • Drive development of Best Practices and project and laboratory safety

  • Key research areas in geophysics: On-demand 4D seismic, frequent monitoring, low-cost 4D processing, integrating AI where applicable and synergistic with projects in reservoir characterization and reservoir recovery.

What you bring

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Brazil on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Post-graduate degree in a subsurface discipline (geophysics, physics, related science/engineering) preferred

  • Enthusiastic self-starter, with 10 years’ exposure to geophysics-related topics in industry or in a research environment

  • Experience in more than one area of geophysics (acquisition, processing, quantitative interpretation, 4D seismic).

  • Subsurface knowledge of Brazilian oil/gas fields is an advantage

  • Understanding of Brazil’s R&D ecosystem, including academic and industrial stakeholders is desirable

  • Problem framing skills to identify business needs, define problems worth solving and construct technology solutions

  • Well-developed communication skills in Portuguese and English to deal effectively with local and global stakeholders

  • Entrepreneurial skills to form, build and grow sustainable win-win partnerships in the Brazilian ANP R&D context

  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and willingness to grow and stretch out of own discipline and comfort zone

  • Embody the Learner Mindset, which in Shell is a shared belief that everyone continuously learns and grows their abilities, learning from others, from mistakes and successes and can always speak up openly in a safe environment.

  • Personal commitment to drive high standards in research quality and safety culture with external parties
