The Role

Where you fit in

The successful candidate will need to be highly skilled in the ecotoxicology discipline. Delivery of complex, non-standard ecotoxicology hazard and ecological risk assessments; having role in external advocacy. Able to work in an environment that is sometimes uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. Having insight and working knowledge on chemicals and environmental regulations with ability to connect and influence at multiple levels and stakeholder types. This role is expected to work under the direction of more senior PS and Ecotoxicology staff members.

What’s the role?

As an Ecotoxicologist,  you will be responsible for providing ecotoxicology advice and services to as part of the Product Stewardship team supporting Shell’s assets, projects, and chemical product stewardship requirements. You will be representing the group in REACH/CLP Consortia to share best practice and develop/monitor testing plans. You will represent Shell at other governmental, industrial, and scientific forums. You will also be proactively addressing ecological issues and responding effectively to ecological hazard questions and liaise with your team to determine appropriate risk management and advocacy strategies. You will develop fit for purpose science solutions in support of Shell businesses and products.

Accountabilities:

  • Support portfolio of assigned businesses and product groups
  • Respond to ecotoxicology queries and product stewardship questions in assigned work portfolio, including verifying ecotoxicology statements on Safety Data Sheets, fact sheets and other related documents
  • Monitor scientific developments in ecotoxicology discipline relevant to portfolio
  • Support scientific studies including those for regulatory compliance and as part of trade associations relevant to work portfolio
  • Ensure toxicity testing is undertaken in accordance with Shell processes and procedures
  • Conduct literature reviews on assigned products issues as needed to support inquiries from business partners/customers and keep relevant documents up to date as needed

What we need from you

  • PhD in ecotoxicology, biology, toxicology, environmental chemistry, or equivalent
  • Relevant experience, preferably in the oil and gas or chemical products industry especially hydrocarbons
  • Experience with EU REACH global chemicals regulations and hazard communication (CLP, GHS) or other HSE regulatory requirements is desired 
  • Experience with persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity (PBT) assessment of petroleum substances or other difficult-to-test multi-constituent substances, complex mixtures/UVCBs
  • Experience with endocrine assessment and/or bioaccumulation assessment is desired
  • Understanding of new approach methodologies (NAMs) and good laboratory practice (GLP)
  • Fluency in English with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and problem solve to deliver results
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to develop and express ideas and opinions concisely
