What is the role?

As an IDT Advisor, your role is pivotal in spearheading analytics initiatives and boosting operational efficiency at SEJ's power trading desk. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Analytics and Workflow Automation: Utilize your technical and quantitative skills to support the trading team by developing comprehensive market analytics suites. This involves engineering and maintaining market data, creating market analytics dashboards and forecasting models to provide actionable trading insights, and automating certain trading workflows to enhance efficiency.
  • Consultancy and Collaboration: You will act as a consultant, shaping and delivering enhancements in partnership with the data analytics and ETRM teams in Singapore. Your expertise will be crucial in guiding solution design, developing strategic roadmaps, and ensuring the seamless integration of new processes and training.
  • Supporting Growth Opportunities: From time to time as the need arises you may be asked to support business develop growth projects including assess integration challenges, technology competency and developing necessary models. Opportunities may include inorganic acquisitions or structured offtakes for BESS, Renewables C&I or Gas Fired generation (or other energy related deals).

Reporting directly to the IT and Digital Manager for Asia based in Singapore, you will primarily engage with the Shell Energy Japan trading desk team. Your contributions will be essential in safeguarding and enhancing the value of product and information management investments, working closely with the natural team as well as the trading team to achieve business goals.

Accountabilities

Your further responsibilities may include the following:

  • Use advanced data analytics to create dashboards offering actionable trading insights. Collaborate with the trading desk to align tools with business needs, prepare documentation, and conduct user training sessions. Identify automation opportunities within trading operations to enhance efficiency, streamline processes, and reduce human error.
  • Engineer, maintain, and manage data to enrich trading analytics. Introduce new data sources, connect to external APIs, and ensure data quality and stability.
  • Facilitate the onboarding of new IT applications, ensuring compliance with risk and security standards, and assist in engineering interfaces for seamless integration.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to plan the IT budget across portfolios, ensuring enhancements are delivered within budget. Regularly update stakeholders on costs and progress. Influence and align delivery with the portfolio/product roadmap and strategies.
  • Ensure the stability, integrity, and performance of operational environments. Identify and realize improvement opportunities. Facilitate integration with other product/application delivery teams for end-to-end service delivery.
  • Build trusted partnerships with various stakeholders, including Business Interface Managers, business partners, suppliers, project/product team members, and the IT support organization. Provide consultancy and occasionally lead initiatives in cyber security, incident/problem management, change management, and other operational activities.
  • Collaborate with Data and Solution Architects to translate specifications into high-level design and technical specs, ensuring adherence to simplification and standardization principles.
  • You may also be expected to focus on a specific product or project where you will play both a key delivery and strategic role. You’ll thrive as the expert and go-to person in the area for many of the design, strategy and other ongoing activities and initiatives alluded to in the list above

What We Need From You

We’re keen to hear from individuals who have extensive experience within the analytics domain, who aspire to embed themselves in our team, grow into an advisor as outlined above and contribute to the growth of Shell’s journey towards net zero.

Suitable candidates will come with deep experience working as a data analyst, preferably in the energy or financial industry, with knowledge of end-to-end technology capability of the integrated value chain. Further requirements are as follows:

  • 2+ years of experience as data analyst in commodity trading, the energy industry, or financial services.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Python, R, or SQL. Knowledge of statistical modelling is a plus.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI, Snowflake, or Tableau is a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Committed to learning and staying abreast of internal and external trends and best practices.
  • Capacity to cultivate and continuously expand expertise in the energy domain.
  • Able to act as a focal point for a specialized area (technical or business), able to lead teams without formal authority, while managing multiple competing priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills, being comfortable interacting with and able to communicate clearly with senior stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to deal with conflict and ambiguity effectively.
  • Team player. Able to work effectively with all levels and parts of the power trading business and IT organization.
  • Ability to work effectively in virtual, geographically dispersed, cross-cultural environments.
  • Fluency in English and Japanese (written and spoken)
