Purpose

The Originator leads the frontline initiation, development and negotiation of structured energy transactions with electricity retailers, generators, trading houses (Customers) in Japan. He or she leads the management of the portfolio of Customers and contractual relationship(s) and works with the wider team on delivery of value enhancing and deal extension potential.  In addition, he or she plays an instrumental entrepreneurial role in the further roll-out of SEJ’s organic and in-organic growth plans.

Accountabilities

  • Continuous market scanning of, identifying and engaging with established and new entrant Customers.
  • Developing, relationship and deal journey managing a prioritised funnel of structured electricity trading prospect Customers.
  • Leading the pitching, negotiation, mandating and project managing of a portfolio of term- and or framework deals to conclusion.
  • Working with internal stakeholders to develop/structure the bespoke products which serves Customer’s requirement on risk management, capital constraints etc.
  • Uncovering and pursuing of in-organic growth opportunities in Japan.
  • Developing sales & marketing materials as well as working with Corporate Relations to refine/update SEJ website.
  • Actively engaging with internal stakeholders on Shell value chain integration opportunities.

Skills & Requirements

- Required Qualities

  • Native level in Japanese and fluent in English
  • 7 or more years of professional experience in the power retailer/ commodity trading / utility preferably with exposure to electricity industry in Japan including deal / contract delivery.
  • Quality network of contacts in the Japanese power industry.
  • In-depth understanding of the structure of the Japanese energy market, its liberalisation trajectory to date and anticipated market mechanisms.
  • Skill in developing and selling commodity risk management products (e.g. financially / physically settled or fuel source derivatives; imbalance management products etc) that help Customers manage their price and volume risk.
  • Demonstrated success working in international, domestic and multi-functional teams.
  • Good team player with demonstrated ability to progress work collaboratively as well as individually.
  • Experience in mandating deals / business cases; and ability to maintain alignment with Customers on mandating processes and timelines.
  • Effectiveness in business case preparation, articulation, presentation and engagement with Senior Management – obtaining approval.
  • Experienced in 3D relationship management and orchestration up to board and owner level of Customers.
  • Independence, self-starting attitude, strong work ethos and high follow-up and delivery reliability (in particular vis-a-vis Customers).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, natural communicator and builder of trusted relations.

- Beneficial Experiences and Qualifications

  • Experience in sales and/or supply and demand management in power retail business
  • Experience in financial institute focusing on Customer credit management.
  • Corporate finance and accounting knowledge and the ability to analyse Customer financial statements, business cash flow, income statement and balance sheet projections – and appreciate the implication of commodity market and business performance sensitivities on company financials.
  • In-depth understanding of the detailed end-to-end trading value chain and deal operationalisation. Swift grasp of operational implications of trading activities we have yet to engage in or which change as a consequence of regulatory change.
