SLMT (Shell LNG Marketing & Trading) is the Global LNG Trading organization and the Commercial Freight Operator sits within STO which is the Operations arm of Shell Trading. Shell is global leader in LNG business. The current scale of operation is largest in the industry. This is a global business with supply projects in both Atlantic and AP basins and customers spread across Asia, Europe, Middle East and South America. The nature this high value trade is evolving fast with the mix of long- and short-term contracts changing fast.

Commercial LNG Operations provides commercial, logistical and administrative support to Shell Trading and is as such responsible on a day-to-day basis for the timely implementation and execution of freight and commercial transactions to ensure that all obligations arising from the LNG contract and Time Charter Party (TCP) are met and carried out professionally. Closely working with Freight Traders and Optimization Trader to value-add, minimize profit leakage and create optionality in the LNG contracts and Supply programs. Trading operations are also involved in the development of projects and new contracts. Due to the nature of physical trading operations, out of office hours working will be required.  

The LNG Operations team is responsible on a day-to-day basis be able to operate LNG ships under SLMT responsibility working closely with the chartering team. In addition to freight operations this incumbent will also be expected to gain necessary experience to implement and execute commercial deals.

What's the role?

As an LNG Commercial Freight Operator, your responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Ensure that LNG Operations fully complies with Shell’s internal standards including compliance and HSSE, paying special attention to HSSE hazards and risks that may have impact on vessels voyage or port operation.

  • Ensure that all obligations arising from the time charter parties are carried out, and that any necessary documentation and operational requirements are complied with.

  • Pro-actively devise optimal and most economic voyage plans working with the vessel and commercial colleagues. This includes voyage and bunker economics.

  • Work closely with internal stakeholders e.g. Traders, Optimization Traders, Finance, STASCO Shipping, understand drivers for decision making, challenge those where required.

  • Manage relationships with external stakeholders, counterparties and service providers, regulatory bodies, ship owners and agents.

  • Work closely and support team engaging with cargo operations team for deeper understanding of cargo contractual obligations

  • Ensure that all operational information and deadlines are entered into Trading systems on time and with ‘First Time right’ approach

  • Close out the charter parties accounting for all costs, including TCP claims and obtain sign-off from freight traders.

  • Support short term initiatives to continuously improve the efficiency of all aspects of commercial freight operations and synergy with other teams within SLMT

  • Deliver against relevant SLMT and agreed Operations KPI's.

  • The operator will handle global 24/7 trading activities and whilst colleagues are available in other time zones, the operator is expected to respond flexibly to requests outside of normal office hours.

  • Competency and digital literacy will be required. Operator is expected keep up with systems reporting requirements and be equipped with basic skills of data analysis to keep up with SLMT digitalization vision.

  • Track record of continuous improvement and be able to identify and implement solutions to ruthlessly eliminate complexity and waste in terms of processes.

  • Ability to identify risk and opportunity in complex operational circumstances.

  • Ability to leverage on functional support and provide high quality options and opinions to commercial stakeholders.

  • Ability to analyze business challenges and formulate digital solutions using innovative technology

  • Able to gather and manage large data sets from different sources with complex relationships, streamline, develop reports and critically analyse scenarios to determine best action and support decision making.

  • Basic to advance understanding of Microsoft Power platform (Power BI, Power Query, Power Automate and Power Apps) will be a plus.

Experience in commercial operations (preferably LNG) will be a strong advantage. A high level of fluency in the English language, both written and spoken is required.
