What is the Role?  

The Maritime Structure Vetting Assessor is perfect for a Maritime Professional with a Naval Architecture background who has a passion for safety and the ability to tackle engaging projects during a time of significant industry change.

If you are a Naval Architect with experience in shipbuilding, ship owning, or classification environments, particularly with a focus on Tankers and LNG carriers, we offer you the opportunity to elevate your career. You will drive improvements in safety, environmental performance, compliance, and digitalization within our industry.

Bring your Maritime/Naval Architecture skills to us, and we will enhance your knowledge of assurance activities and their connection to our commercial exposures. We will develop you into a maritime assurance expert, helping us manage current and emerging maritime risks that impact our business stakeholders.

On a day-to-day basis, your role will include the following:

  • Engage with Technical Operators: Collaborate on repair and structural issues to ensure optimal vessel performance.

  • Analyse Class Reports/Documentation: Conduct thorough reviews of class reports and related documentation.

  • Review Survey/CAP Assessments: Evaluate survey and Condition Assessment Program (CAP) assessments to maintain high standards.

  • Performance Analysis: Assess the effectiveness of hull coatings to enhance vessel efficiency.

  • Mooring Fitting Review: Examine mooring fittings to ensure safety and reliability.

Assessing the quality of all internationally trading tankers, dry bulk carriers, and project vessels proposed for use by Royal Dutch Shell Group Companies, ensuring Shell avoids using or being associated with sub-standard ships, thereby minimizing the risk of:

  • Harm to people or the environment

  • Damage to Shell’s reputation

  • Financial claims on Shell

These activities will span across Crude, Products, LNG, and Specialty businesses. You will engage both internally and externally, fostering a spirit of partnership.

We will entrust you with the responsibility of positively assuring Shell’s maritime activities, managing the effective close-out of maritime incidents, and conducting reviews of third-party ship management companies. These tasks significantly impact Shell’s reputation in the maritime industry due to the high level of engagement with external stakeholders. You will be in a highly visible role, serving as the focal point for several engaging projects.

As a Maritime Structure Vetting Assessor, you will share your maritime expertise across all areas of Maritime Assurance. Working both independently and as an integral part of a virtual team, you will thrive on collaborative relationships with a range of stakeholders.

What We Need from You? 

We are eager to hear from individuals with a Naval Architecture degree who have a solid understanding of relevant international standards, Classification Society rules, and regulations. We will also provide you with an overview of Shell Design Engineering practices.

In addition, we hope to see the following in your profile:

  • Experienced Naval Architect, with a minimum of 5 years in a Naval Architecture in Shipyards, Class or Design Houses working across Tankers (Oil, Gas, Chemical)

  • Relevant experience in a similar field

  • A solid understanding of tanker operations

  • Recent operational or business experience that can be utilized to manage current and emerging maritime risks

  • Evidence of your resilience and ability to successfully manage challenges and conflicts

  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills
