The Maritime Vetting Team Lead is an ideal role for an experienced Maritime Professional, who is looking to expand their career into a key leadership position and who has a passion for safety and compliance, and the ability to tackle engaging projects to enable success during a time of significant change for our industry, where we seek and adapt to more competitive and clearer energy solutions.

You’ll also have the ability to manage our current and emerging Maritime risks that can impact our business stakeholders, by leading and supporting key projects. 

The role also allows the opportunity to develop emergency response skills as a member of the National Response Team.

You’ll join Shell Shipping & Maritime’s Vetting team in Chennai, providing support to local and global Shell and Joint Venture businesses, and overseeing a team based in Chennai. As Maritime Vetting Team Lead you will be providing support to local and global Shell and Joint Venture businesses and overseeing a team of direct reports.

What is the Role?

On a day-to-day basis, your role will be to provide support and coaching to a team that will assesses the quality of all regional and internationally trading tankers, barges, dry bulk carriers and project vessels, proposed for use by Royal Dutch Shell Group Companies, to avoid Shell using or being associated with a sub-standard ship, thus minimising the risk of:

  • Harm to people or the environment

  • Damage to Shell’s reputation

  • Financial claims on Shell

These activities will take place across Crude, Products, LNG and Speciality businesses, and you will spend time engaging internally – and externally, cultivating a real spirit of partnership.  

We’ll entrust you with responsibility to positively assure Shell’s Maritime activity, managing the effective close out of Maritime incidents, support reviews of 3rd Party Ship management companies, all of which have a significant impact on Shell’s reputation in the maritime industry due to the high level of engagement with external stakeholders. You’ll find yourself in a very visible role providing assurance and feedback to the wider Shipping & Maritime leadership team.

What We Need from You?

  • You have the leadership capabilities to engage and inspire a community, to create an environment where your team can be creative and empowered to develop integrated maritime solutions for our customers, with intelligent risk taking.

  • You are comfortable with ambiguity, do not shy away from difficult decisions or messages and lead your organisation successfully through change.

  • A senior marine qualification, typically a Class One Certificate of Competence, is strongly preferred.

  • You have Operational exposure to Oil, Chemical, LNG, DLNG shipping activities. Experience in incident management and ICS protocols.

  • You must be able to demonstrate good understanding of IMO Conventions, shipping regulations, HSSE Control Framework/SEAM Standards and the Maritime Process Model.

  • You will be required to meet the requirements to be Subject Matter Expert Maritime Safety - operational/downstream category.

  • Experience as Master or Chief Engineer Officer on ocean going tankers (LNG, LPG, Chemical, Crude, Products)

  • At least 5 years sea time as an officer, or as Chief Officer or 2nd Engineer with more than 4 years Shore based experience.
