The Shell Lubricants Hub Hamburg is the largest lubricant plant in Europe, producing more than 400 million liters annually. The site is central to Shell’s global “Powering Progress” strategy and currently being transformed into a modern and competitive supply hub to sustainably grow the lubricants business. Around 200 employees and 200 contractors ensure the supply to over one million customers in more than 160 countries. As a global leader in the lubricants sector, Shell is sustainably and future-orientedly developing this long-standing business. The plant supplies close to 50% of Shell lubricants produced in Europe, being the backbone of the European lubricants supply.

What’s the role

As Laboratory Manager, you will lead the end-to-end analytical and quality control laboratory at our Lubricants Hub Hamburg. You will ensure the accuracy, reliability, and compliance of all laboratory operations while supporting production, product development, and continuous improvement initiatives. Your leadership will be key in maintaining high safety and quality standards and driving innovation in analytical methods.

What you’ll be doing

Ensure seamless laboratory operations, effectively lead and develop the laboratory team, and uphold stringent safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of laboratory technicians, chemists, and analysts.

  • Manage day-to-day laboratory operations, including personnel, equipment, and analytical workflows and continuously improve commercial and operational performance of the laboratory.

  • Ensure compliance with internal safety and quality standards and external regulations, and handle competence management, and performance reporting.

  • Collaborate with production, R&D, and quality assurance teams to resolve technical issues and support process optimization.

  • Support audits and customer visits.

  • Oversee investment proposals and support digitalization and automation initiatives.

What you bring

  • University degree in chemistry or equivalent, with experience in managing and operating a laboratory.

  • Strong knowledge of analytical techniques and quality systems.

  • Proven team leadership experience and excellent people development skills.

  • Proficient in test methods and lab equipment for quality control in chemical assets, preferably lubricants production.

  • Experience with digital lab tools and data systems (e.g. SAP QM, LIMS) is a plus.

  • Strong commercial mindset, continuous improvement focus, and change management skills.

  • Strong analytical competencies for quality data insights and effective communication at all organizational levels and with external partners
