What’s the role

As an Analytical Chemist, you will report to the Analytical Team Lead, also, you will be responsible for the routine analytical technical support for GC lab section. The ultimate objective is that appropriate analytical methodology is effectively applied to ensure that manufacturing product streams meet compliance, customer specifications and fit-for-purpose requirements. You will support activities fit into the following categories:

  • Technical support for GC lab section

  • Application of Quality Assurance for chromatography and spectrophotometer activities

  • Implementing initiatives that enhance the quality of streams and products

  • Training and mentoring of operation lab testers

Accountabilities:

  • Manages GC analytical section (test method development, Statistical Quality Control, equipment preventative maintenance and calibration, tester training)

  • Ensures data accuracy aligning with ASTM methods, where possible

  • Provides support in other areas of the QM organization as required, specifically providing back up to the Tech Spec area

  • Promotes Quality Assurance systems and their effective application to ensure test data reliability. Support QA Coordinator in the implementation of QA systems and overview their operation

  • Validates the introduction of new QC testing methodology prior to commissioning. Supports Process Chemists in implementing quality initiatives in process operations

  • Assists Process Chemists in process unit troubleshooting related to quality issues. Participates in QA audits for main lab, Norco field labs and contract labs. Implements new lab technologies (for example - installation, calibration of new test equipment). Supports lab testers in non-routine test protocols to ensure that the methodology is well defined and understood

  • Recommends new equipment and methodology to meet future needs

  • Develops training tools and trains testers in understanding test methods and analytical equipment to perform Level 1 troubleshooting, interpretation of test results, sampling and process knowledge

  • Assists testers in trouble-shooting methodology and equipment (Level 2) after the tester has expended their knowledge of the instrumentation

  • Reviews all non-routine test method results before being released to customers. Assists Operations Team Leads in evaluation of tester capabilities

  • Provides a routine interface with operations related to the lab areas that they support

  • Supports QA process in the application of Statistical Tools used by Testers. Some travel for attendance at training, technical seminars, and conventions

What we need from you

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • You must have minimum of 5 years experience and knowledge of petroleum analytical testing, extensive knowledge of gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, IC and ICP

  • Bachelor of Science degree or other technical degree is desirable but not required

  • Strong analytical background in troubleshooting Effective problem solving of methodology and equipment

  • Causal analysis experience familiarity with standard test method protocols used for refinery testing (ASTM, UOP, ISO)

  • Experience with EZ Chrom or Open Lab software, the ability to apply Quality Assurance concepts to varying situations

  • Data Management and statistical knowledge (SQC) Ability to share points of view and drive resolution to closure Leadership ability to support, educate and mentor a variety of individuals ability to gather data quickly and make quick logical decisions

The base salary range for this position is $101,000.00 - $151,000.00 per year.  Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.   

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave to birthing mothers, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.

Additionally, employees are eligible for disability leave for up to 52 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.
