What’s the role

The Shell Norco Refining and Chemicals site is in the process of hiring hourly development program operators premised to start at the end of 2nd Quarter 2025. The Hourly Development Process Operator will enter the Norco Operator Development program and upon successful completion will be responsible for monitoring, controlling and conducting activities that pertain to unit operation and taking corrective action when necessary to ensure that all unit conditions and operations follow Norco’s safety, environmental, and operating policies and procedures.  For this role, we are looking for candidates with PTEC certifications and less than three years previous experience as a process operator.

Accountabilities:

Typical duties and responsibilities of field and console operators include, but are not limited to the following requirements:

  • Ensuring strict compliance with Norco safety policies and procedures, taking immediate corrective action in the event a potential issue or unsafe behavior is observed

  • Ensuring that operations are conducted with environmental stewardship in mind and within permitted limits

  • Ensure proper shift turnover by providing effective written and oral communications to the relieving shift which cover routine and nonroutine issues encountered, unit operating conditions, etc.

  • Performing thorough rounds using both sensory and electronic monitoring tools, and accurately recording, trending, escalating, and correcting observed conditions where abnormalities are found

  • Maintaining good communications with other team members and with other facility teams (Utilities, Logistics, etc.)

  • Working together with all team members in a professional manner and actively assuming personal accountability for meeting Shell Norco standards of continuous personal and professional development

  • Performing required preventative maintenance, assisting in troubleshooting potential issues, and giving assistance to others when unit problems occur

  • Permitting safe work for other personnel in a quality manner and according to all Norco safety policies and procedures

  • Preparing equipment in a safe and quality manner for maintenance according to Site policies

  • Properly using personal computers and mobile devices for meeting daily performance expectations and accessing plant and unit information and procedures

  • Participating in training and respond to emergency situations as required

  • Actively complying with all Norco policies and procedures

  • Ensuring that workstations and the work location are clean and free of hazards through proper housekeeping

  • Actively participating in the development and performance of assigned group tasks and meetings

  • Communicating with engineers, maintenance technicians and other team members to assist in identifying and resolving abnormal situations, routine maintenance issues and/or extended planned and scheduled maintenance activities

  • Properly catching samples from the unit, running samples in unit labs, and monitoring product specification

  • Console operators will be responsible for trending process variables and adjusting unit conditions for optimization, understanding complex control systems, monitoring product specifications, and responding to alarms according to the Ensure Safe Production guidelines.

What we need from you

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Be in / going into their final semester of an Associate of Applied Science degree in Process/Production Technology OR candidates graduated with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Process/Production Technology within 3 years of this posting

  • Preferred 3 or less years of relevant experience as a Process Operator within the Oil, Gas, or Chemical industry

  • Preference has a current GPA of 3.0 or higher OR have graduated with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Please submit transcript with application and resume

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or any related sciences

  • Must currently hold or be able to qualify to receive a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card. Note, information regarding TWIC qualification standards may be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic

  • Must be able to read, speak, and communicate effectively to understand processes and communicate with colleagues and customers.

  • Must demonstrate a competency at using a process computer interface to manipulate and control an operating process unit

  • Formal education and/or training related to production operations, or a related skill area is preferred

  • Emergency Response and/or Fire Fighting training, experience, and/or certification is preferred

  • Must possess and maintain a current, valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the United States

  • Willingness to take and achieve satisfactory results on Shell’s pre-employment testing battery

The starting pay for hourly development program is $25/hr. After 90 days, the pay will then be increased to $40.93/hr. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave for birthing parents, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.

Additionally, employees are eligible for short-term disability leave for up to 26 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay as well as Long-Term Disability insurance.
