The Maritime Technical Advisor (MTA) provides maritime expertise in respect of technical, operational, and commercial performance whilst protecting the Shell Group’s reputation by ensuring that all maritime operations are conducted in accordance with the Group requirements for Health, Safety, Security, Environmental and Social Performance Control Framework (HSSE&SPCF)

Your purpose, among others, is to monitor and assess the effectiveness of shipping and waterfront operations, advise on new maritime related regulations, projects, procedures (including handling for specialist cargoes) and to manage all aspects relating to marine matters appertaining to the safety, environment, commercial and third-party issues.

You will be a true business partner to internal customers we serve, and at the same time protecting the business from Maritime Risks and ensuring the Shell standards are kept. 

You will act as first point of contact for Shell Depots and Lubrication Blending Plants with main responsibility to support in managing their marine risks through implemented assurance processes. You will also conduct terminal audits (owned, contracted and customer), manage reviews of maritime contractors and vessel technical operators, inspect of barges, participate in audits of ship-to-ship cargo transfer activities and marine emergency support activities.

On behalf of Shell, you will also attend product related internal & external (industry bodies) seminars and meetings to share best practices, positively influence implementation of safety standards and provide feedback on initiatives, standards, and regulations.

What’s the role?

The Marine Technical Adviser is the source of maritime expertise and has a responsibility to Business Leaders and asset managers for all maritime related advice.

You will manage the provision of the following key services:

  • Assist andmaintaining an overview of risk activities including using HSSE tools (HEMP, Causal learning, Sphera) to manage risk exposure and to assess and implement controls and provide recovery processes.

  • Advising and supporting in recording, reporting and follow up of marine incidents and assessment of root cause investigations.

  • Assist in providing support and advise on cargo safety and quality issues including potential carriage concerns. Liaise with supply chain colleagues and barge owners to clarify issues and obtain resolution to problems.

  • Assist the respective Site Leadership Team on marine emergency response as part of the EU Shipping & Maritime team, including organizing and implementing training and exercises to test the effectiveness of marine emergencies.

What we need from you?

We are keen to hear from candidates with good knowledge and proven skills in shipping operations, ship/shore interface management and maritime transportation (liquid bulk in inland vessels is required).

We would also like to see the following reflected in your CV: 

  • Experience ashore would be an advantage and exposureto a marine regulatory environment ispreferred.

  • Significant years of service aboard inland tankers

  • ADN Basic and ADN C Certificate

  • Related degree in Maritime

  • Good experience with HSSE processes and management systems managing risk regarding shipping operations.

  • Sound knowledge and the ability to apply international legislation is key to this position.

  • Competency with HSSE & Maritime related trainings

  • Good communicator (both written and oral) in English is required for this role, whereby sufficient Dutch or German essential in this role.

  • Self-motivated, mature professional with ability to work independently with minimal supervision who enjoys working with others from different functions.

  • Ability to work and integrate in a diverse global team.
