Position Purpose

About the Opportunity:

Shell Canada is seeking for a Machinery Rotating Engineer, also referred to internally as a Machinery Engineer, to become part of their Shell Sarnia Manufacturing team.

As a Machinery Engineer, you will train and develop junior Rotating Engineers. This role involves proactively and independently providing the engineering and technical assurance support needed by Shell Manufacturing Centre (SMC). This support will assist the Projects, Maintenance, Turnaround, and Production teams in ensuring the safe operation, diagnosis, repair, and improvement of rotating equipment

Accountabilities:

  • Identify and pursue reliability improvement initiatives related to machinery. Develop strategies and Projects to address reliability threats such as “Bad Actor” equipment within the Process units. The Unit Machinery Specialists engineers focus on the day-to-day operations, and this role would address significant equipment challenges that cannot be completed by the Machinery Specialists

  • Provide input and technical support for Capital Projects to ensure SMC receives the quality of work needed to ensure long term reliability of the rotating equipment.

  • Take part in project development design reviews, technical specifications, and equipment selection phases. Additionally, participate in the commissioning and startup of new equipment

  • Conduct failure analyses and causal investigation of machinery failures utilizing Shell and industry specialists

  • Provide general mechanical engineering support to the SMC organization

  • Provide engineering support to Machinery Specialists as needed. Includes acting a sounding board for various discussions around Rotating equipment and support the development of repair procedures for critical equipment, capital spares, unique equipment

  • Maintain contacts with original equipment manufacturers, vendors and service providers for major and critical equipment and drive continuous improvement in their performance

  • Contribute to and review new operating procedures and procedural changes specific to machinery

  • Champion continuous improvement in reliability performance, cost management and maintenance execution as it relates to rotating equipment

  • Develop and maintain relationships with off-site Projects and Technologies expertise relating to machinery

  • Expect occasional overtime to support Turnarounds or as required by operational needs

  • Anticipate minimal travel for training, meetings, machinery shop performance testing, and repairs

Skills & Requirements

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required

  • Professional Engineer (P. Eng) designation is required

  • Minimum of 8+ years of experience as a Machinery Engineer/Rotating Engineer/Turbomachinery Engineer in maintenance, projects, and/or engineering within refinery and gas plant settings

  • Extensive understanding and experience in rotating equipment engineering principles such as pumps, compressors and turbines

  • Extensive understanding of compressor and pump performance tools such as Pi vision (PI), Bentley Nevada, and oil analysis

  • Familiarity with Design and Engineering Practices is a plus

  • Basic understanding of refinery processes and economics
