Purpose
The Power Trader plays a crucial role in enhancing SEJ’s profitability by focusing on speculative trading to generate profit through power transactions & fuel hedging. The role involves conducting detailed analytics to develop and support trading strategies, as well as assisting the Origination team with deal pricing and structuring to facilitate growth.
As a member of the Trading Desk, the individual will execute trades on exchanges (via brokers and directly with customers) and internally with Singapore & London teams for fuel hedging. Additionally, they will cultivate a deep understanding of physical operations and regulations.
Accountabilities
Develop and execute speculative trading strategies.
Proactively manage risk and exposures within the hedge books.
Continuously monitor market prices, supply/demand dynamics, and industry participant activities.
Provide timely assistance to the Origination and C&I teams with pricing and structuring deals from customers, covering both physical power and fuel hedging requirements.
Support physical operations for the power station and wholesale market, including nominations, commodity operations up to settlement, and trade execution on exchanges.
Maintain and enhance Shell’s power fundamental model and collaborate with analysts to develop additional fundamental analysis tools.
Represent the Trading Team on trading capability enhancement projects and communicate effectively with internal stakeholders.
Engage regularly with peers and experts across other Shell entities to leverage global best practices.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Proficiency in either Japanese or English at a business level, willingness to continue developing language skills (if needed)
Over 5 years of energy trading experience.
Bachelor’s degree in a STEM/Financial Engineering subject or similar.
Ability to analyze complex data and regulations, perform fundamental demand and price formation analysis, and distill insights succinctly.
Proven success in international and multi-functional teams.
Excellent team collaboration skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Independent, self-starting attitude, strong work ethic, and high reliability in follow-up and delivery. Resilience and balanced self-confidence.
Beneficial Qualities
Fluency in both Japanese & English
Strong quantitative skills and technical proficiency in SQL / Databricks & Python.
Understanding of the structure of the Japanese energy market, its liberalisation trajectory, and anticipated market mechanisms.
Interest in the commodity business end-to-end value chain, including mid and back-office operations.
