What’s the role?

The Middle Distillates Senior Trader will be responsible for trading Middle Distillates and components in and around US markets and in coordination with global market positioning generated by Shell Trading’s worldwide network. The successful applicant will join Shell’s Global Middle Distillates Trading Team, an energetic and focused team trading all grades of Diesel, Jet, LCF blends, components and related derivatives, whilst supporting the Shell Group’s short term requirements and longer-term strategy.

Accountabilities 

The Trader will be primarily responsible for:

  • Frontline trading of physical Middle Distillates and related derivatives, in and around the Americas market.
  • Creating and initiating new trades/ideas to profit from physical flows, derivative markets and global arbitrage activities
  • Participation in a wide array of business development activities to find new sources of value.
  • Building sustainable relationships with retail, refining and trading counterparties internally and externally to generate a platform for business growth
  • Driving short and medium-term strategy, including risk management, for trading of specific grades
  • Performing analysis of physical and derivative markets and sharing these views with both the global distillate team
  • Maximizing opportunities presented by the Shell’s Diesel/Jet/LCF requirements to deliver trading value and ensuring competitive positioning for the Shell Group in the retail and commercial fuels space
  • Maintaining a strong Compliance culture and adhere to Shell Business Principles.
  • Required to engage in some business travel as it relates to frontline trading activity

The position requires adherence to Shell Policies & Procedures, Code of Conduct and Compliance Manual. Overall Tradebook accuracy on transactions/Exposure/Profitability will be essential. The position requires first class interpersonal skills and treatment of internal and external customers. The successful candidate will delivering team trading results in a regional and global team, building a top tier trading skillset and fully engaging in overall team business performance.

The successful candidate will be based in Houston but be part of the Global Middle Distillates team of 40+ traders spread across Shell Trading offices globally.

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Specific experience in Middle Distillates (or Products) trading with knowledge of operations and logistics.
  • Trading experience in cargo/pipeline/barge delivery dynamics with high (physical oil contract) transaction loads in diesel/jet fuel and related markets.
  • A track record of high performance in scheduling and operations is essential.
  • Able to tolerate highly variable workload and operational/relational complexities.
  • Keen learner and committed to developing new skills.

The regulatory environment for oil products is complex, highly changeable and highly politicized. Spanning the agricultural, wastes & residues and the mineral oil markets means that exposures can be highly volatile. The Trader needs to be mindful of a constantly changing legislative environment and often challenging reputational issues. The successful applicant will need therefore to be able to demonstrate a strong ability to add value in a traditional Trading sense across a wide set of trading instruments, as well as the ability to manage the wider issues in this highly demanding, but highly rewarding area.

If successfully selected, applicants will undergo the relevant Trader Readiness assessment and achieve sign-off prior to confirmation to a Trader role. Once Trader Readiness has been passed, the successful candidate will be on the commercial bonus plan.

What we need from you

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and/or equivalent experience
  • 10 or more years of current or prior operation or trading experience
  • Highly experienced in Diesel trading with a proven track record in profitably trading these commodities and transportation by rail
  • A confident team player with strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to communicate ideas and information effectively
  • Highly disciplined in trading approach and able to manage exposures and profitability of a trading book
  • Able to focus on and act to maximize bottom line profitability
  • Knowledgeable about the global distillates market

The base salary range for this position is $174,000 - $262,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave to birthing mothers, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents. Additionally, employees are eligible for disability leave for up to 52 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.
